India Today
All of DBI’s challenging work takes place within a fast moving and rapidly changing nation that is of growing importance:
- India has recently overtaken China as the most populated on the planet (1.4 billion). It remains one of the most densely populated countries, with around 400 people per square kilometre.
- According to the 2011 census, 79.8% of the population of India practices Hinduism, 14.2% adheres to Islam, and 2.3% adheres to Christianity (lower in the North).
- North India has significant borders with Pakistan, China, Nepal, Bhutan, Myanmar, Bangladesh and Afghanistan.
- According to Morgan Stanley, India will have the third largest economy by 2027 with a billion Indians connected to one another and the world by smartphones. It is rich in resources, with an immense pool of highly educated, globally literate and mobile workers. Nevertheless many are being left behind and need assistance.
